Water damage is not one fault. Clean tap water, saltwater, rainwater and sugary drinks leave very different residues, while the length of exposure and whether the device was powered on can change the outcome. For repair shops, the priority is an accurate diagnosis before quoting parts. For DIY users, it is knowing when a controlled repair is realistic and when a board-level technician is the safer option.

First actions before ordering any parts

Do not charge, power on or repeatedly test a wet device. Electricity moving through moisture and residue can create short circuits that damage components which may have been unaffected at first. Remove the case, SIM tray and any external accessories, then switch the device off if it is still running.

Do not use a hair dryer, oven or rice. High heat can soften adhesives, distort display layers and drive moisture further into the device. Rice does not remove residue from connectors or circuit boards. The useful next step is a prompt internal inspection by someone with the correct tools and experience.

If the device has been exposed to saltwater, pool water, soft drink or another contaminated liquid, the chance of corrosion is higher. These jobs need more than drying. Residue must be cleaned from the board and connectors before it continues reacting with metal contacts.

Diagnose the device before selecting repair parts

A visual inspection gives useful clues, but it does not confirm every fault. Once the device is safely opened and disconnected from power, look for moisture indicators, white or green corrosion around connectors, residue on shields, and staining behind the display or cameras. Start with the functions that are easiest to isolate. Does the device accept a charge? Blurred images, camera fogging or a camera that will not initialise can require replacement camera modules. Do not assume a fogged lens will clear permanently. Moisture trapped inside a camera module often leaves marks or causes later failure.

A battery that drains quickly, swells, overheats or will not charge should not be reused. Liquid exposure can compromise the battery and its protection circuitry. Treat a swollen battery as a safety issue: stop using the device, avoid puncturing it and arrange appropriate battery recycling.
