Repair Guide: iPhone X Screen Repair

iPhone X is one of the best phones made by Apple, and it's crazy to think that is already 3 years since this phone came out. Apple sold millions of these worldwide. And since the iPhone X is still a great phone to use and can handle almost everything it's still worth fixing it if you have it broken.

Change the display on your iPhone X wholly by yourself. All you need is the Apple iPhone X Screen Repair Kit. Follow the instructions step by step, and you will soon be able to enjoy a working display again.

1) Switch off your device

To get started turn your iPhone X completely to avoid damaging it during the repair. Press the Sleep/Wake button for about three seconds until the slider labeled "power off" appears. Swipe it from left to right and it's turned off.

2) Remove the enclosure screws

You will need a PL1 screwdriver to open your iPhone X. Remove the two 6.9mm pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure. They are on the left/right side of the lightning connector.

3) Tape over cracks

Tape over your glass to keep further breakage contained and prevent bodily harm during your repair. Lay overlapping strips of packing tape over iPhone's X display until the whole face is covered. If you have difficulties to get a suction cup to stick in the next few steps try folding a strong piece of tape (such as duct tape) into a handle and lifting the display with that instead.

3) Lift the display

To lift the panel you will need a suction cup, a hard plastic pick, and a heat gun, which you get in kit. Screen is glued to the frame, use a heat gun / hairdryer (not included in the kit) to heat the outer edges of the display to about 60°C (140°F).

Place the suction cup on the bottom of the phone. While lifting the screen with it, insert hard plastic pick between the aluminum frame and the display. Press down the aluminum frame and slide the pick all around the iPhone between the aluminum frame and the display frame. Try not to stick the pick in too far because that could damage the flexible flat display cables.

Use the pick to push the display so the tabs come out of the aluminum frame. Fold the display over to the side, and be careful not to stretch the flexible flat cables too much.

4) Remove logic board bracket

Unscrew five Y000 screws securing the logic board connector bracket. And then remove the bracket (The bracket may be lightly adhered in place. Lift gently but firmly separate it).

5) Disconnect battery

Take nylon spatula and use it to pry the battery connector up from its socket on the logic board. Bend the connector slightly away from the logic board to prevent it from accidentally making contact with the socket and providing power to the phone during repair.

6) Disconnect front panel sensors

Keep spatula in your hand and use the point of it to disconnect the front panel sensor assembly connector.

7) Disconnect display

Do the same from previous 2 steps and disconnect the OLED panel cable connector from the motherboard.

8) Disconnect digitizer cable

Use the point of a spudger to pry the digitizer cable connector up from its socket. This connector is tricky to reconnect. Take your time and align it carefully then gently press it into place with your fingertip.

9) Remove front panel sensors cable

The front panel sensor assembly is adhered in place. Carefully lift the cable until the adhesive separates.

10) Remove the display assembly

Remove display assembly completely.

11) Earpiece Speaker and Front Sensor assembly

Use Y000 screwdriver to remove 1.2mm Y000 screw on the back of the display assembly (near the infrared camera port).

12)

Beneath the screw you remove lies a small metal grounding clip. If it didn't come out with a screw remove it now.

13) Remove speaker/sensor assembly

Remove two more Y000 screws securing the spekar/sensor assembly.

14)

Gently pry under the top edge of the speaker assembly and flip it over. The speaker remains attached via very thin flex cable be careful not to strain or damage that cable.

15)

Use a hairdryer and heat the top front of the display for about a minute, in order to soften the adhesive securing the sensors. Then slide the flat edge of your nylon spatula underneath the flex cable below the microphone. Twist gently to separate the microphone while being careful not to strain or damage the flex cable.

16)

Working left to right slide an opening pick beneath the flex cable and underneath sensors. Gently wiggle and lift to separate the module from its notch in front panel.

17)

Use tweezers to wiggle the ambient light sensor and lift it from its notch in the display.

18)

If the white diffuser strip detached and remains embedded in the display. You need to carefully lever it out along the top edge using a thin blade or pry tool.

19) Remove the earpiece and speaker

Remove the earpiece speaker and front sensor asesmbly.

20) Reassemble with the new screen

Your iPhone X screen is completely disassembled. Now take your new screen and reassemble your iPhone X by following this guide in reverse order and then test everything up to make sure you did everything properly.

Test everything

Congratulations, you changed your iPhone X screen. Now just test a few things to make sure everything is working properly:
