A cracked display is rarely damaged further by the replacement part. It is usually damaged during opening, when excessive force, the wrong pick or an uncontrolled metal tool meets a tightly bonded frame. For repair shops, tool choice affects turnaround time and the number of avoidable frame or OLED failures. For DIY repairs, it determines whether a screen replacement remains a cost-effective job. What makes the best phone opening tools?
Phone opening tools need to do three jobs: soften or overcome adhesive, create a controlled gap, and hold that gap while the perimeter is separated. The most useful tools are thin enough to enter the seam without deforming it, but not so sharp that they cut display layers, battery pouches or flex cables.
Modern phones are commonly opened from the rear cover or display assembly. Glass-back models often use wide adhesive around the housing perimeter, while many iPhones and Android handsets use strong display adhesive with cables positioned close to one edge. A tool that works well on an older plastic-backed handset can be a poor choice for a curved OLED display or a smartwatch.
Material matters. Plastic picks are safer around batteries and delicate displays, but can bend or wear down in heavy adhesive. Thin stainless-steel opening tools are effective for the initial entry point, particularly on glass panels, but should be used with restraint. Once a gap exists, plastic should do most of the separating.

A hairdryer can work for occasional DIY jobs, but it offers less control and can heat a small area too aggressively.
Use enough heat to soften adhesive, not to make the device uncomfortable to handle. Excessive heat can discolour OLED panels, weaken internal adhesives, affect cameras and increase battery risk. Remove the SIM tray before applying heat where applicable, and avoid concentrating heat over a swollen battery. A swollen battery is not a standard opening job - stop, isolate the device and handle the battery as a safety issue.
Suction cup or screen lifting clamp
A strong suction cup creates the first small opening after heat has softened the adhesive. It is most useful on flat glass display assemblies and rear covers with an intact, reasonably smooth surface. Pull gently and steadily. The aim is to create a narrow gap for a pick, not to lift the entire panel by force.
For regular repairs, a screen opening clamp or press-style lifting tool provides more consistent tension than a basic suction cup. It can be particularly helpful on heavily bonded screens, where one hand needs to stabilise the frame and the other needs to insert a pick. It is less useful on severely shattered glass, textured backs or sharply curved panels where suction cannot seal properly.
Plastic opening picks
Thin plastic picks are the day-to-day workhorse. They slide through softened adhesive, maintain the gap created by the suction cup and reduce the chance of scratching the frame. A set with different thicknesses is practical: a very thin pick for entry, then a slightly firmer pick for travelling around the perimeter.
Do not push a pick deeply into the handset. Most damage occurs when a pick is inserted too far and catches a display cable, wireless charging coil, antenna assembly or battery. Use a shallow, controlled depth and work a few centimetres at a time. If the pick stops moving, apply a little more heat rather than increasing force.
Thin metal opening blade
A flexible steel blade, often called an opening tool or iFlex-style blade, is useful when plastic cannot enter the seam. It can cut through stubborn adhesive at the first point of entry and separate glass from a metal frame with minimal prying height. This makes it one of the best phone opening tools for experienced technicians working on tightly sealed devices.
The trade-off is risk. Metal can scratch painted frames, chip glass, cut a display polariser or puncture a battery if inserted too far. Keep the blade as parallel to the panel as possible and use it only until a plastic pick can take over. Never lever hard against the battery area or use a blade as a substitute for proper heating.
Nylon spudger and plastic pry tool
A nylon spudger is used after the device is open. Its flat end can disconnect battery, display and camera connectors without shorting contacts, while the pointed end helps route cables and lift small adhesive tabs. It is not designed to break strong perimeter adhesive, but it is safer than metal around exposed boards and connectors.
A wider plastic pry tool is also useful for lifting battery adhesive tabs, releasing midframe clips and separating modules once screws have been removed. Keep several on hand. Their edges become rounded over time, and a worn tool is more likely to slip.
Match the tool to the device construction
The best tool combination depends on where the device opens. For a rear-opening phone with a glass back, use even heat, a suction cup, a thin entry blade and plastic picks. Start away from camera clusters and known flex cable locations. On a display-opening handset, pay close attention to the edge where the screen cable routes into the housing. Opening from the wrong side can tear the flex before the panel is lifted.
Tablets need broader, longer picks because their adhesive runs over a larger perimeter. Smartwatches need smaller tools and lower heat, as screens are compact and often sit close to batteries and sensors. Laptops generally require plastic picks, a spudger and the correct precision driver set rather than screen-opening blades.
Always identify the exact model number before selecting tools or parts. Devices within the same family can have different opening directions, screw types, display connectors and adhesive layouts. Model-specific repair information is more valuable than assuming a tool method from a visually similar handset.
A safer opening sequence
Before starting, power the device off, remove the SIM tray where relevant and inspect the housing for existing cracks. A cracked rear cover or display can fragment during lifting, so cover damaged glass with clear packing tape to improve suction and contain loose pieces. Wear eye protection when shattered glass is involved.
Warm the adhesive evenly, then apply light suction near an edge with the lowest risk of cable damage. Insert the thinnest plastic pick if possible. If it will not enter, use a metal blade only to establish the gap, then swap back to plastic. Leave one pick in place while moving another around the perimeter, rather than repeatedly closing and reopening the seam.
Once the panel is loose, do not pull it away immediately. Open it like a book only after confirming the cable side and checking for adhesive resistance. Disconnect the battery before disconnecting or handling display connectors. This basic order reduces the chance of a powered short while tools are near the board.
Tools that cause more damage than they save
Kitchen knives, thick flat-head screwdrivers, utility blades and metal paint scrapers are not phone opening tools. They are too thick, too rigid or too sharp for controlled work. They can bend housings, break water-resistance seals and turn a simple battery or display repair into a frame replacement.
Cheap mixed tool kits can still be useful, but inspect their picks, suction cups and driver tips before relying on them. A poorly fitting driver strips screws; a hard, brittle pick can crack; and a weak suction cup encourages excessive pulling. For frequent repairs, replace consumable picks and worn tools rather than forcing them through another job.
